I agree with Peter J Moore
The exact same problem. The charger failed and it is now outside of the 30 day return period.

Re-Charger doesn't work either
After many frustrating phone calls to customer support on my DX3900 Kodak camera, I puchased a quick charger for the batteries for my camera. The dock DOES NOT charge these batteries. I also puchased an extra battery so that I would never be caught short. Well the quick charger lights up , blinks then goes off...indicating a full charge. When the battery is placed in the camera it last all of 4 pictures...then shuts down. I am TOTALLY disgusted with this product and all it's accessories. I have spent OVER for a camera that doesn't work. Don't waste you money on the quick charger either!
Obviously, I have a BAD camera and Kodak won't admit it!

In the right context...a wonderful camera
I've found the DX7630 to be an easy to use camera very well suited to casual, handheld picture taking. There's not much of a learning curve, the body feels solid in the hands and the image quality is a good match for on-screen use and consumer level printouts. Shutter lag seems minimal, the AF is fast, battery life is long and the large LCD display is easy on the eyes.

On the downside, this camera would not be the best choice for more deliberate, tripod bound photography. Aside from the rudimentary self-timer, the DX7630 lacks any remote shutter release option and does not support any uncompressed file formats. Also, the JPEG compression is somewhat excessive and the camera provides no user controlled noise reduction.

These limitations shouldn't trouble most Kodak shoppers as this camera really shines in other areas.

Worth the price!
** Update - I just received my first 20x30 picture from Ophoto - It is very impressive. I took the picture hand held at 1/30 second, wide open aperture. Only slight abberation on the edges and, even at 1/30, the picture was sharp and colors true. I'm now trying pictures with a tripod to minimize any movement.
****

I just received this Kodak camera and took some day and night pictures. I have no problem with the resolution - the prints are more than sharp. In cloudy situations where shade is caused by green trees, I get a magenta color in shadows. This does not always happen, snd I am still trying out different situations. The auto-focus is great, time between pictures is very quick (< 1.5 seconds) and the camera is light with most controls placed well. However, the dial for choosing the mode (Auto, Aperture or Shutter priority, etc.) gets a little difficult to turn at times. It could be improved.

The included instruction book is OK, but I found it lacking in some of the features for the camera. For instance, to change the aperture or shutter in aperture or shutter priorty mode, you need to press the wheel in, then turn to adjust the aperture or shutter. I did not see that in the manual (if it's there, it isn't apparent).

If you're looking for a more than adequate digital camera that can supply sharp enlargements ( up to 16x20 or greater ) then this is the one to buy. The lens is excellent. I especially like the ability to set the camera manually. Night time pictures were excellent. A great way to explore the world of digital photography.

Wow!!!
Just bought this camera for my wife to replace another camera for her birthday. This camera is so full of features you will never have the wrong camera. Over 20 different scene modes, auto mode and the manual modes (PASM). Pictures are wonderful. You cannot go wrong with this camera

Great features - Easy to Use!!!
The Kodak DX7440 is a near perfect combination of features and ease of use. The 2.2" viewfinder is great for framing shots both inside and outside and the 4x zoom gets you a little closer than most cameras in its class. The ergonomics of the camera are also a plus. It fits comfortably in my hand and the dial and joystick are very easy to use. The Kodak DX7440 produces vivid colors that other digital cameras just can't match and the images are much sharper than the Canon I previously owned.

For the beginner photographer, it has a full auto mode and a number of special scene modes to help take great pictures. For the intermediate photographer, it has PASM modes which give you even more creative control. The movie mode is better than most cameras, but if you really want to make movies, you should probably get a camcorder.

I have only 2 complaints about the DX7440 - the lack of a superfine compression mode and the use of a proprietary battery. However, neither of these issues are too big of a deal. Hopefully Kodak will release a firmware update at some point in the future to address the superfine compression. I ended up buying 2 backup Li-Ion batteries so that should not be an issue in the future.

In conclusion, I would recommend this camera to any beginner or intermediate photographer who wants a camera that is simple and fun to use.

Fantastic camera!!!
I had been looking for a digital camera to carry around for special events instead of lugging around my 35mm. I researched all kinds of cameras. Sure there are more expensive cameras that probably do more, but for the average picture taker this is a winner!!!! I used it right out of the box; without using instructions. This is my first digital camera too! I took pictures of fireworks with the special night mode for fireworks and they turned out great. Also the video part is great too! It will go as long as your memory card holds out. I purchased an additional 256 mb memory card. It comes with a charger so you don't have to buy a camera dock unless you want to. The batteries really hold up. I went a week and took numerous pictures and decided to charge it just in case. I love this little camera. The color in the pictures are great and I even put it on night mode and took a picture in the dark and the flash lit up the whole room and I got my picture. Kodak you definitely have a winner in my book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best 4MP digital on the market!!!!
Tested at least 20 different digital cameras (ranging from $300 to $1000) before deciding to buy the Kodak DX6490. This camera is awesome...a digital treasure. I also lucked out (accessory-wise)when I bought it ($399). Among the INCLUDED items were a 128MB SD card, 6000 dock station, battery AND charger, leather camera bag. Am a professional photographer and have never used a digital camera until now. The DX6490 is now 'attached to my hip', along with my Nikon F4 and Fujifilm GA645Zi (medium format). Both of these cameras (combined) cost well over $4000...so that should tell you how much the DX6490 impressed me. It's a lifetime keeper!!! Anyone interested in buying an exceptional digital camera at an affordable price would be downright foolish to overlook the DX6490!!!!!!! Besides being an exceptional 'digital machine', it has a professional look as well (unlike other digitals which cost much more).

Wonderful Camera!!!!
This is one of the best cameras anyone could ever buy. So easy to use, it'll make you want to take it everywhere. I sure do! The camera's ready right out of the box. The pictures come out wonderful and the battery life is great. Only a few minor flaws (no image stabilization on extreme close-ups and the auto-focus makes you wait sometimes before you can snap the picture) but they do not transfer onto the pictures. Even with the jittery close-ups(when you use the digital zoom @ it's max) the pictures come out clear. With the auto-focus problems you just have to wait for the green light when the camera's ready. All-in-all you cannot go wrong with this camera. It, as with any new piece of equipment, takes time and practice to learn how to use it (to get the full advantage of its features). So just practice, practice, practice!!!! I took some pictures of my son in the park playing...they almost look like I hired a professional and I only have had the camera since December 2003. I would recommend this camera from the beginner to the enthusiast. It's worth the price just for the zoom and manual controls it offers.

ONE HECK OF A CAMERA!
WOW! I had this camera given to me as a gift knowing its quite demanding price of $500. But it's worth every penny! It has everything! You can take any shot you want to with every feature known to man to help you out. Check it out:

- PASM mode equipes you with not only full creative control of F-Stops and aperture, but also with a 16-second to 1/1000 of a second shutter speed to really keep the action shots sharp or to create a purposely fuzzy image

- Burst feature helps you really get multiple great shots at say, fireworks, or a baseball swing. This feature can shoot six photos per second!

- Ten-second timer

- Once you have focused on the image, the camera will give you warnings if you are about to take a pretty crappy photo!

- Multiple zoom zones so putting what you want to see into focus is easy

- Catch a beautiful, wide lake, or a tiny red flower with the landscape feature, and the close-up feature!

- Flash modes include:
- red-eye
- automatic flash adjustment (auto)
- regular flash

- You can choose weather you would like the date stamped onto each picture

- You can also choose between many different special effects (this list includes some effects you can use on the free software)
- sepia (western)
- black and white
- saturated color (intensified color)
- cartoon
- coloring book
- fish-eye

- You can tag a photo to be emailed right when you dock it into your computer

- You can even protect a photo from being deleted

- With a four megapixel sensor and a whopping ten-x optical zoom, you can still have a breath-taking photo from a distance!

These are just a few of the hundreds of features on this camera! I would seriously suggest this for your all purpose shooting!

Excellent Camera!
Having previously bought a Kodak digital camera several years ago, I was a little reluctant to purchase another Kodak. But we needed a new camera that was easy to use, high resolution, USB compatible, with large storage capability, and with the ability to take extreme close-ups. The 6490's 10X optical zoom was a convincing factor, as was the price. Prepared for disappointment, we charged it up and started taking pictures.

In summary, the performance is excellent. While the camera is a little too big to serve as a "pocket camera", this is the only drawback I can find. The pop-up flash works well, the settings are easy to understand and manipulate, the macro lens selection does a great job bringing objects into focus, and the resolution is truly incredible.

The only thing we haven't really tested is the ability to capture moving objects. But for all of our detail digital imaging needs, this camera has exceeded our expectations.

There is no question that when I get around to buying a digital camera for home use, this will be the one.

Best 10X Zoom Camera for Enthusiasts!
Really enjoying this camera! It's an upgrade to an earlier kodak digital with so many features and excellant picture quality. I did a lot of research before buying a new 4mp camera. I was looking for an advanced camera under $500 that I could still grab to take pictures of my 2 year old with.

The most important feature to me is the ease of the menu. Kodak has it hands down for their menu. When going from a simple, fully auto camera or from a 35mm manual to a digital camera that offers manual (PASM), night mode, moving objects mode, movies, etc., I don't want to spend all my time fishing through a complicated menu system, I want to take the picture/video! Kodak makes it as easy as can be. Love the joystick. The movie feature is a fun bonus!

The second feature is the 10x zoom! Wow! What fun!

The third feature is the dock. My first digital had one and I loved it. Nothing better than charging your camera and downloading from one spot with the press of a button. You can buy a rechargable battery travel kit if you need to. Amazon offers it as do others.

Works great on a Mac! Very important to me as not all companies are apple friendly.

Love the large display for viewing.

Make sure to get a memory card - I'd recommend a 256mb. should be enough to hold as many pictures as the battery will allow you to take at one time. I've yet to have the batter get low. Have only taken 90 pictures at one time though.

Good fun! Easy to work, enjoy!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this camera!
I bought this camera shortly after the birth of my first child, which was four months ago. I am SOooooo glad I did! This was our first digital camera, so I wanted to make sure I got one that was easy to use. After reading many reviews, as well as the opinions given in Consumer Reports, I decided on this camera (along with the dock). I couldn't be happier!
One of my favorite features on this camera, as compared to other cameras, is the large viewing screen--it is so much easier to tell if you like the pictures you've taken with a larger screen, and also easier to view pictures when you are outdoors.
Most importantly, though, I love how simple this camera is to work. My parents have a digital camera that I still can't figure out. However, with the Kodak, I didn't even have to read the instruction manual. Everything is very self-explanatory, and using the buttons to accomplish a change in picture quality, color, etc. is a piece of cake.
I didn't think I would use the feature that allows the user to take video clips, but as it turns out, I use it all the time! I have a 256 mb memory, so I can get a fairly long video out of this great camera.
I really could not be happier with my purchase. If I had to find a complaint, it would be that, like all other digital cameras, it does not have a large enough memory on its own. It's not that fun to buy a nearly $500 camera, only to have to then spend more money to be able to take a decent amount of pictures. Other than that, though, I'd recommend this camera in a heartbeat!

Awesome Camera
I purchased my Dx6440 after a lot of research. The reviews are right-on. The camera is very easy to use. One of the features I like is; the screen will display the Mode setting. You do not have to remember what the symbols on the dial mean. The Dx6440 normally comes with the basic camera Dock, which makes transferring pictures to your PC simple. The Dock also charges the included Nimh rechargeable battery pack. The flimsy battery compartment door rarely comes into play with rechargeable batteries. In a few years, when you replace the battery pack you just need to use normal care. If you use the included lithium battery - press the battery down as you close the battery compartment door. I would save the lithium battery for emergency backup. I took about 140 pictures on a 256 SD card and didn't run out of room or rechargeable battery power. I had the preview screen on and most were flash pictures. The pictures were excellent. I relied on my high resolution PC monitor to determine the picture quality. I also reviewed the pictures, and a couple of video clips on my 36" TV with the AV out cord (included). Overall, this is an awesome camera.

Great camera
My previous digital camera (also a Kodak) fell in the lake this summer. So I went searching on the internet to find a replacement. I wanted to upgrade to a 4 mp anyway. After all my research, I decided on this one. I was not disappointed. It is very simple to use and takes great pictures. My friends cannot believe they are looking at digital camera prints. The different modes are great. I used the sport mode with kids in the middle of three-legged races and sack races. There was no blurring. The night mode works nicely, but you have to hold the camera very still. The flash is stronger than my last camera and does a good job for indoor pictures. The Kodak Easyshare software it came with is great too... very easy to use. The OneStep printing is great because it adjusts your printer settings automatically.

If you are looking for an easy to use digital camera with lots of features that takes great pictures, this is the one for you.

Very Nice Camera! Get the printer dock too.
I love this camera. I was reluctant to get this because I am used to my Nikon 35mm SLR which takes super sharp photos. But I was not disappointed with my Kodak digital 6440 at all. It came bundled with the printer dock for a great price. It is so easy to use and the purchase price for the cartridge refill and 4x6 paper on Amazon is cheap so I could not go wrong. I have a pretty good all-in-one printer, but opted to get the printer dock 6000 since the price was so good (after much debate!). My photos are so nice - actually professional. My deal also included the large Kodak camera bag for free which has a detachable smaller bag just for the camera. Overall, no buyers remorse here from the "buyers remorse queen". haha

Very nice camera but non warranty service is a rip off
Very nice camera. Easy to use. Takes great pictures and the Kodak software is MUCH better than the HP software I'm using now. BUT if you need non warranty service, like drop the camera or get it wet, your in deep do-do. I spilled something on the front of the camera, barely got it wet. United Camera and Binocular Repair, Kodak's nonwarranty repair center, wanted $193 to repair it.. Of coarse I'm not going to pay that much since the camera didnt cost much more than that anyway. I'm using an HP now and even though I dont like it as much as I did the Kodak, I'll never buy a camera from Kodak again.

Great First Camera (or second or third)
I personally have had several digital cameras over the years and my perents wanted to start to go digital. So I decided that in order to make my life easier (a.k.a. less phone calls), I would buy the most simple camera without a bunch of bells and whistles. Well it was reading and playing around with different cameras and found this little gem.

This camera is EASY TO USE.

It has a small wheel on the back to select special photo modes.

It has the sound of a shudder so you don't take pictures of feet (there is a delay from pushing the button and picture with all digital cameras).

It docks on the optional Printer Dock (I bought as well) which prints incredible dye sublimated photos (Translation.. Won't run in the rain). The optional dock comes with a rechargable battery.

It can connect right up to a laptop or desktop with ease throught the USB port.

It compresses prictures well so you can take as many as you want at highest resolution (but pruchase a 128 MB or 256 MB SD Memory chip for lots and lots of photos).

The photo quality challanges some of the real film cameras in the marketplace.

It has a real photo lense not cheap plastic.

It feels good in a large or small hand. It feels like a camera (not a plastic lightweight toy).

It has movie capabilities.

I am actually looking at the next step up from this camera DX6440 with is 4 megapixel. But This camera is awesome.

Oh yeah. Did I say it was EASY TO USE.

Enjoy

Easy to use but BEWARE of using ordinary batteries!
Here are my observations with this camera after using it for over 4 months now.
1) It is easy to use. Almost anyone could use this camera instinctively.
2) The pictures it takes are sharp enough but don't expect to get Hasselblad clarity and depth with this camera. Like most digital cameras, you will enjoy the point and shoot convenience that filmless photography offers. Remember, if you don't like a photo just delete it and take another shot if you want to.
3) The DX6340 will suck the life out of ordinary Duracells or Energizers after about 6 shots (with flash). Maybe Kodak can design an high capacity external battery pack which can be slung on one's shoulder and wired to the camera with a simple cable. This battery pack would then make this a good choice to carry for weddings or parties (or other photo-demanding occasions) where one can take 60 to 80 pictures without losing battery juice.
4) If Kodak decides to redesign this camera as a smaller unit, that would be good, too!

Overall, you can't go wrong buying this digital tool. Good work, Kodak!

... plastic junk ... beware..... MP's isn't everything !
Here's the reasons why I call this a ... plastic junk,
1. The 4 MP doesn't give enough picture quality. 4MP is just a marketing thing, its actual quality is more like 2MP.
2. Visible purple fringing/ chromatic aberrations.
3. LCD monitor is not good, tough to see anything on in sunlight. Using a cheapish LCD helps drive profit margins higher for Kodak on this.
4. Unacceptable time lag when veiewing on LCD.
5. Takes more than 13 secs to write anything on the CF card. Even my last year's Fuji was much better than this !
6. Poor viewing capabilites.
7. You need to spend lots of extra money to get its dock. Why doesn't Kodak sell it along with camera itself ? After all it hardly worth 15 bucks !
8. Missing features like movie/audio, Video out, atleast some manual controls etc. or atleast a 3x optical zoom

I have compared this camera to other Canon/Sony ones and find this way below on quality/features compared to them. I see that many people here have a 5 star review for this, but then maybe its their first experience with a digicam.

Kodak needs to improve the quality of their products and stop making such shabby cameras. Buy a Canon S200 or S330 or A40 and you will be much more happy. They have much more features and have very good metallic bodies. Don't buy this plastic junk. Look all the freebies that Kodak is throwing in to sell this :)

I know I will not be very pouplar in my harsh review about this cheapie but I prefer to be candid.

User-Friendly
This camera is a good deal. It is aimed towards the people who want to take out the camera, push the button, and not have to deal with other [stuff]. While sometimes I wish for a bit more freedom and control, it does make photography easy and accessible. Some downfalls are the lack of real zoom. 2x isn't much, and the digital zoom quickly reduces the quality of the picture. Getting a really close up shot of something is very tough also. Overall a good deal, the software that comes with it is easy to use and helpful, if a bit simplistic. I would say that getting at least a 64 mb memory card is necessary, as the included one is too small to be of any real use. I got a 128 mb card for (US)[money] after a mail-in rebate, and it holds 102 pictures at highest quality. Good quality, easy interface, though sometimes lacking in freedom to tweak camera settings. Another necessary purchase with this is 4 AA Ni-Mh batteries and a charger... so that you can have one set in the camera and one set charging. I don't recommend getting the "dock" or anything like that, very simple and quick to transfer pictures with the included USB cable. It takes maybe 3-4 seconds per picture on highest quality.

What a great product!
I've had this camera for two weeks now and I feel very justified in saying...stop looking and buy this one. What an amazing deal! This camera is easy to use, has tons of great features (the dock that keeps your battery charged is a must, as is a 128mb card) and takes beautiful pictures. I waited to write my review until I got some hard copies back from the kodak print center and they look even better than my 35mm. I can honestly say that I will never need more camera than this. I use it for the kids sporting events and have tried it indoors and out. There simply isn't a reason not to go with this camera. Some of the 2 megapixel cameras are going for the same price.
