Very good scanner for the money. Could use better software.
Amazing ScannerI am amazed by some of the gripes about this scanner...first of all, why does it seem like everyone who has one also has an HP printer, if you're going to have a quality scanner, you should have the best in output as well, epson photo printers are the best around. Second, this smart panel issue, that is a convienence bells & whistles feature...of which I have never needed to use, but that's just me. Besides, you should be using Photoshop or similiar for your scanning to get the most control out of it. Third, noise? Someone earlier said that it made terrible noises...if your scanner is making very loud noises, then there is something wrong with it, this is one of the quietist scanners I've ever heard. 4th, power switch, as a Mac user, I'm used to devices not needing to be powered off, sleep mode, almost no power consumption and its ready to go when you want to use it.
I'm not trying to slam anyone else for what they have experienced, just trying to show that some of these bad reviews I've read have been soley based on little annoyances and does not seem to reflect the quality and excellence of this scanner. I have recommened this scanner, and I used to recommend the previous model as well. Many of which have purchased them because of the obvious quality.
5 stars, big thumbs up on this one!!!
I have no complaints about this scanner!

Not photographic paper, but great card stockUsage: While not necessarily a superb choice for matte photos, this paper does work wonderfully for printing desktop publishing documents (such as greeting cards, calendars, brochures, and other items printed on card stock).
Quality: It's consistency doesn't really offer a matte photograph appearance, even though the glossy paper from Epson DOES offer a glossy appearance.
Color: I've noticed that some packages are off-white, slightly tan/beige/yellow rather than white. It's kind of hit-or-miss as to whether you get the white or the off-colored paper. I've gotten the off-colored paper 2 out of 7 purchases.
(I use the Stylus Photo 870 to print)
FINE ART PAPER
Wow, ultracoolIt has always been my preference to have pictures done on a matte medium. While using traditional pictures especially if you like I did switched to the APS format, you could no longer get a matte finish. Since I have gone digital, the only papers, that I have seen have been glossy, so this was a pleasant surprise.
A CO-WORKER WHO IS ALSO A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER, INTRODUCED ME TO THIS PAPER:
Knowing I used many reams of paper in glossy prints but really liked matte, a co-worker told me of this matte finish ink jet paper and showed me a photo he had done. Wow! He had the Epson 890 like I did, so I had to run out and get some of this amazing paper. His daughter in the photo, was wearing a red dress and it was amazing in depth of color.
MY TEST SHOTS WERE PHENOMENAL:
I was not dissappointed in the results. Though I have used it only on a couple of shots (I consider my test shots), I was amazed at the crispness of the photo. Only time will tell how well it lasts. I plan to subject some to the ultimate test (for me) hung on my office wall without a frame. I'll write back and tell you how it did.
NO GLARE MEANS THE PICTURE JUMPS RIGHT OUT AT YOU:
What I particularly like about matte pictures is the lack of glare. You don't have to get the right angle to view it. Also there is almost a 3D effect since you don't see the surface of the paper to make it flat. That is really nice.
MATTE IS CHEAPER THAN GLOSSY:
Matte paper at 50 pages per sheet cost also about the same of 20 sheets of glossy paper.. That too is a good thing.

Worst Printer Ever
Not very friendly with Windows XPCOMPATIBILITY : Seemed decent with Win98 (sometimes), but was awful with WinXP
PRINTER: Prints very badly. Lots of broken lines in the images. Tried to print some CD labels, and they never came out straight.
COPIER: Never tried it, so I cannot comment.
SCANNER: You have to really help the picture in to get a semi-decent scan. I probably scanned 100 photos, and only 1 or 2 looked near professional.
FAX: Never tried it
I upgraded my OS to Windows XP Pro a few months ago and it was a nightmare trying to get the printer to work. I used the new XP software from the Canon website, but it still didn't help out. I gave it to my mom to use since she needed one anyways. I STILL can't get the software uninstalled now.
I do not recommend this printer.
Canon multifunction printer
- 600 x 1,200 dpi optical resolution, 9,600 dpi enhanced, 36-bit color depth
- PC and Mac compatible
- Easy 1-touch scanning button and USB interface
- Patented LED Indirect Exposure (LIDE) technology
- Ultraslim design, just 1.5 inches tall

Highly Portable, for occasional use, slow as molasses scansThe downside of lightness is that the scans take an extremely long time. This makes it usesless for scanning multiple pages at a time. It'll drive you nuts if you try.
The newer versions of this printer may be faster.
I myself will get a larger but faster Epson scanner to carry with me.
High quality scanner, easy setupThe software setup was quick and bug-free. The software included with the scanner is easy to figure out and use, and it allows you to make subtle corrections to the picture as well as apply many special effects.
Depending on the footprint of the item you're scanning, it can take from about 8 seconds for a photograph to about 30 seconds for an 8-1/2 by 11 inch page with photography and text. The scanner runs very quietly, which I value highly.
I run this scanner off a PowerMac G4, using it mainly for photos to be placed on the Web. I've also used it to scan in text. I have been extremely happy with it, and would recommend it without hesitation.
The best scanner for your money.

Dust Inside, aka DOAMine also had DOA film scanner.
You can be sure I'll try to avoid all future canon products.
Veeery sloooow!!
It's good for the price
Also, it is a little confusing to install. Remove ONLY THE YELLOW TAPE. Don't try to take off the blue tape, or the transparent tape covering the ink wells on the bottom of the cart. It will ruin the cartridge if you do.
Epson Ink is the best I've used so far - better than HP by lightyears and definitely more impressive than anything else on the market.
