BETTER GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY
I bought the scanjet 4400cse scanner 4 months ago. It just quit (conviently after the 3 month warranty expired, probably built in planned obsolescence). No mercy from HP.

It performed fairly well, except the IRIS OCR was [unsatisfactory]. I bought FineReader Pro 5.0 OCR, which works wonderfully.

Absolutely the best
The photo scans are amazing. The scanner is also easy to use and set up. If you want amazing photo scans at a great price than I recomend the 4400cse.

It's totally SCANTASTIC!
Hewlet Packard does a wonderful job of making photo hardware. I have their DeskJet 932C which is mind blowing, and their 4400Cse Scanner? Scan'tastic! It enlarges your photos beautifully to several times their normal size and has 48 Bit color and 1200x1200 DPI!

Yikes Watch Out for XP and This Scanner
I originally used this scanner with 98se and was very happy with it. We upgraded to XP and the problems began. First XP wouldn't recognize it when I tried to connect it to the same USB port that it worked happily with before. I tweaked and fiddled and read on the web about a lot of people who had the same problem.

Hp help was no help. I didn't have any of the suspect hardware they mentioned. I downloaded updates and tried to reset the compatibility. Nothing worked. So I connected it with the parallel cable. It now works but o-h s-o-o s-l-o-o-o-w-l-y.

So I went from being fairly happy with this beast to being quite unhappy.

One very good scanner
This is my first HP product, and it certainly won't be my last. Installing this scanner on my Windows 98 system with my existing Lexmark printer was a breeze, as well as installing the included software. It was very easy to scan everything from photos to written text documents. The software was sometimes off when it came to selecting the type of document you want to scan (a black and white drawing instead of a color photograph, and vice versa), but you can easily change it and obtain the results you want. As with most other scanners, there is a printer pass-through port, which works well, though there may be slight pauses while printing. Other than that, this is a great HP scanner!

A great product!
This is my first scanner and it was recommended to me by someone who has been using HP scanners for years. It was easy to install and get started. And the scanned pictures look fantastic!!! Also, in resonse to the reviewer from Palmyra, PA: Yes, you can crop with this scanner. After the initial preview scan, use your mouse to box-off the portion of the image you want to save. Then proceed to complete the scan. The saved image will only be the portion you boxed-off.

Not so great!!
I am not at all a computer genius, but I have used scanners before, and this is one of the worst. It's ultra slow, scan quality is awful, and you can't just scan an item and be done with it- if you scan a photo and then want to crop the image, it rescans the photo, then when you try to send it to a program or save it to disc, it scans it again. I find this extremely annoying, especially when I am scanning large items that I have to hold in place. I'm sure computer geniuses will laugh at this review, but all I can say is, I am quite unhappy with this scanner.

Belt problems
I was pleased with this scanner until I scanned my third or fourth document. (Unfortunately, this occurred after the 90-day warranty expired.) While scanning the document, I heard a rattling noise, and the scanner stopped scanning. I looked under my document and through the scanner glass I saw a small white plastic cap rolling around loose. The belt that pulls the scanner back & forth had come off its upper axle because this cap, which should stay on the end of the upper axle, had popped off. (Note to HP: The cap ought to be threaded, like a screw, or glued on, so that it does not pop off.) I tried to email hp.com to ask for help in opening the scanner and fixing this on my own, but my computer keeps getting an error message from their website emailer.

Great scanner!
Like the reviewer before me, I am new at scanning. And I was having a hard time finding a scanner that was Win 95 compatible, that could be hooked up using parallel, that offered 600 x 1200 resolution with 36 bit or more color depth, and that scanned both photos and pages from books under 100 bucks. This one was perfect. I had no installation problems, and I was scanning in 10 minutes.

I first tried it out with a piece of paper, to see if I could scan the information off of it. It scanned, but when I tried saving it to notepad and it was almost done saving an error message popped up that said "Sorry, an unknown error has occurred." So then I tried copying it, and I pulled up Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and it pasted just fine. A little while later I scanned a photo of my great aunt, a black and white photo. It scanned perfectly.

Many people complain of the slowness of parallel, but it doesn't bother me that much and I didn't think it was slow at all. I think the photo software that was included was not good enough, the interface of the program is nice looking and fancy, but the lack of options to choose to enhance and change your photo is a bad thing. You have to buy their full featured program in order to get all the features. But I was expecting this, since many other people has received these type of programs with their scanners. I recommend getting Paint Shop Pro shareware version, or PhotoDraw trial version from Microsoft.

    too much
This product is available at many other locations for $99. That is the price for a new scanner, not refurished. See other sites.

Reviewer below wrong -- great price. I'm happy!
I bought mine 3 weeks ago, and am very happy! Don't know where the reviewer below shopped, but I price-checked all over. This scanner is cheaper here than anywhere else online -- check for yourself, and search for "4300Cse".

I saved money because it's "refurbished". I was a little skeptical, but gave it a try. Glad I did! ...This looks brand-new, I can't tell the difference. Works just fine. Bottom-line, saved me bucks.

I would recommend this scanner to home-users. I'm happy.

    Good interface, OK scans
I have had this scanner for about 2 years and have never had a problem with it. The drivers are a little hard to find on cannons web site if you are running xp. it has a one button interface that you press when you want to scan something and it will ask you what program you use for the picture. that is a nice feature. The "scangear" drivers and software are pretty good and let you do some simple things when you preview the scan like brightness, contrast, cropping, before you do a final scan.

If you want to print your pictures at high quality than i would resommend getting a higher quality scanner, but this is a great deal and qorks great for small images and posting your photos up on the web!

hard to beat for the price...
Picked this up for (...) - and except for lacking the Z-lid of the newer Canon scanners, it works like a charm. Only uses a single USB connector and smooth as silk when used inside of Photoshop. I've actually left his scanner in my briefcase and forgotten it was there. A great compliment to a laptop, and a breeze to operate.

Factory-reconditioned Canon FB630U CanoScan USB Flatbed
I have been using this scanner for approx. 1 year and have had no problems at all with it. I realized when I bought it that it was not the new FB630U scanner, but a refurbished or factory-reconditioned scanner, and anticipated problems, however, the only difficulty I had was hooking it up and that was due to my lack of knowledge, not the scanner. I called the company and they very pleasantly walked me through the installation and I haven't needed anything since. My experience with this scanner has been comparable to it being a new scanner.
There are sometimes "lemons" produced in all things, new or re-furbished but I would not hesitate to recommend this product based on my experience with it. Due to this also I would not hestitate to buy another product that had been factory reconditioned if I were carefully managing my money.

    A great buy for laptops
This is very useful when you are travelling out of the country with your laptop and need a printer.

    sales team loves them
I purchased 4 refurbished bjc-80 printers for our sales force. They love the ability to go onsite and print a contract while in front of the customer. When used with ink jet paper the output is great. Our reps are using these printers with the infrared port on their compaq laptops, which works great. Only problem is the infrared communications is a little slower than a printer cable, so it seems to slow the prining down 10 or 15%... all in all a excellent value that i recommend to anyone who needs a portable printer with excellent output and great portability.
