I bought this item because I thought there was a charger in this kit based on the previous review.. there ISN'T a charger included... but it's still worth the money... the case is very small, just big enough to hold the camera, battery and memory stick. I needed an extra battery [price] and memory stick [price] anyway. i am happy with this purchase

This is a great kit , has all the essentials and is worth the money . If you were to buy the battery and charger seperately it would be more or less the same price but it also comes with a memory stick and a little pouch for it all .

These items SHOULD be included with all DSCX31 Sony cameras, but they're not, so this must be your first purchase after buying your camera.

The case is an attractive black "fake" leather with some heavy duty padding. It fits your camera body's form quite well and protects the fragile screen and lens assemblies.

The battery charger is a rapid charger which will recharge a set MUCH faster than the standard unit included with your camera. We're talking a charge time savings of several hours, so this is an invaluble item to have, particulary if you use your camera a lot.

Also included is a spare set of Stamina batteries. Since one set came with your camera, this extra set is great in that you can always have a charged set of batteries ready to go at all times.

Given the fact that Sony doesn't include a protective cover/case for your camera out of the box, this purchase is a wise one, particularly since the LCD screens on the cameras are completely exposed and prone to scratching. Highly recommended.

If I was just using the case for the camera and the filters and extra battery it would be okay. But adding just a few photography basics stretches the case beyond it's limits. There is no room in the bag for the lens hood. Also I use a neoprene camera strap (a big step up in comfort from what came with the camera), with the strap, the camera barely fits in the case. There is no room for the case for extra memory sticks. I can fit the shutter remote in the bag but there is no real room for the macro lens.

The extra battery and two filters that come with this case are definitely essential items. I just wish the case was a little bit bigger.

The case for the Sony 717 is both roomy and functional. The extra battery is essential, since I don't think that the factory battery lasts as long as advertised under day-to-day use. In addition, the lens filter is a must-have item for this camera. Overall, the bundled pricing makes this a good value.

According to the Dell and Sony sites;
- this kit does contain the same battery used in the new 500 series.
- appears to contain the same CD-RW's used in the 500's.
- Assuming that the older models are the same approximate size as the new one the bag should hold it too.
- Both sites list this item as being an accessory for the 500 model.

All I can determine is that the packageing hasn't been updated since the arrival of the new 500's.

I've ordered one from Dell - I'll let you know how it goes.

If your first camera is a Sony FD-90/85/73, then I would encourage you to purchase this starter kit for both conveinence and peace of mind.

To begin, the battery itself is what makes it worth purchasing. Most batteries will rack up quite a bill so it's usually to your advantage to buy in starter kits. Not to mention I would strongly recomend against buying third party batteries like polaroid etc. Such batteries void warranty on the camera itself and are not up to the same level of quality as Sony batteries are.

The case is also the best size for the Mavica series, the problem with other brands and sizes of camera bags is that the Mavica is a monster of a camera, it's huge and an irregular size, making it hard to find an ideal case.

The disks, the lens cleaner are really not as important as the battery and case itself, but certainly save you some trouble from having to buy disks and a cleaner.

If you're an amatuer or professional photographer, it is still to your advantage to purchase this kit, however, you might wanna consider investing in a larger case since many professionals and amatuers carry more accessories then you're regular Joe Photographer and the Mavica case is designed for the camera and the kit contents only.
