Great choice for a first time camcorder buyer.
...The unit is easy to use and the instructions are simply presented and very clear cut. My wife uses it without complaint and is always happy with her results.

On the other hand, the unit does have some nice'though limited-- advanced features such as preset exposures, special effects, and Sony's unique NightShot feature. My daughter especially likes the special effects package. I particularly appreciate the Night Shot feature. I video a lot of youth sporting events that can involve a lot of transitional lighting issues, especially on those evenings around the time change seasons, an this unit handles all those issues very well. It does a commendable job in moonlight as well.

The unit is well designed and rugged. It is not a choice for die-hard vidoephiles'the range of advanced features is too limited, but they should be adequate for normal family outing type use.

Battery life using the LCD is rather short. The viewfinder picture is black & white. Using it rather than the LCD expands battery life significantly but the quality of he picture in the viewfinder is not good.

The audio quality is average. Functionality of interface with other devices (TV, PC, etc.) is good.

On the whole, a great unit to start out with or for more adventurous outings where camera safety might be an issue. (I took this one white water rafting'not my state-of-the-art unit.). It has enough features to give a feel for an advanced unit without overwhelming the user, provides better than average output and cost wise is a relative bargain.

great value!
I bought this for christmas and I must say I am quite impressed! light enough for easy handling, good image quality, a lot of features for the low, low price. LCD panel does drain the battery quite quickly but with the eyepiece (black and white...aaarrgghh) you can get almost 8 solid hours of filming in...more than enough...recommended for first or second camcorder owners...

Excellent gift.
I'm not an ellectronics person and I never used a camcorder before, so when I was given one as a gift from my wife I started to get worrried. But the instructions were easy to follow and the camera works beautifully. I used it all Christmas day and the quality of the pictures are wonderful. I think as a result of having such good fortune with my camcorder, I am looking forward to my next sony purchase

Good out of box performer
This is my third video camera. I have previously owned VHS-C cameras that perfomed well. I needed the Nightshot feature for the investigations I do. The first time out, knowing general camera operation, I found this camera very easy to use. The flip out viewer is very sharp and the sound playback is good for instant review of videos. The compact size makes it easy to handle. I have yet to use all features, but I am confident that they will be satisfactory also. If you need a video feed to a computer, you'll need a capture device or get one of the digitals that have the USB/Firewire hookups. Basically, it seems to be a durable easy to operate camera.

Great first-timer

I had been kicking around the idea of buying a camcorder for a couple of weeks and bought this model just two days before going on vacation. I didn't do a whole lot of research, I just liked the look and the price. It is small and sleek and super easy to use. It can use regular 8MM tapes, Hi8 or Digital8. I used it for recording live music performances in Nashville and was happy with the quality of the video and audio on playback. There are 8 effects for shooting (sepia, stretch, etc.), along with three fade-ins/outs. So I have more options than I really know what to do with at this point but I'm sure I'll get into them as I use it more. The display is sweet and can rotate around.

My one complaint is the battery area. The battery clips on the back, but there is no cover - my Sony digital camera has a locking compartment the battery slides in. I'll probably also be picking up a spare, even though it seems to hold a charge well. I really like the size because I have small hands and short fingers, but I can still use the strap and reach all the buttons.

Great Start
This camera is a great start for any person who has never done filming before. The camcorder has many tecniques to experience with I am only 13 and I have never filmed before. This was a great choice for my first camera.

feel like a director
this unit is a very good camera for the price. for my first camcorder i didn't want to go digital, for the simple fact of the price. all the functions are very easy to learn and all the buttons are placed in an area that you can use just one hand to activate them. the night vision mode is awesome, it's like an army movie and you can see in pitch black with supplied light. in conclusion buy the damn thing and you won't be dissapointed.

Best Camcorder for the money
I have never owned a camcorder before and I wasn't ready for digital just yet, but I am very happy with this camcorder. It is so user friendly and the picture is extremely clear. It's very easy to hook it right up to your television so you can show family and friends the video you have taken. you can't buy a better camcorder for the money.

Replaced Old Sony TR 100 Hi 8 With this
My old hi 8 went caput after 10 years use that was very trouble free. The new one has way more features that the 100 and costs much less. ...
I use the viewfinder instead of the display as I am used to it and so far have recorded 3 hours on it and it tells me I have 2 hours left. I used the telephoto constantly which takes power put am very happy with the results
I recharge the battery after use with the no memory effect so no problems. I use the supplied battery for dubbing and it will run 2 hrs in the dubbing mode which is great.
I dub hi 8 super vhs output to a super vhs vcr and do not notice andy difference in the quality of the dub.
Yes there is a more blurry picture if you dub to standard vhs but that is normal.
Unless you want to do some super pro stuff this camera is the one to get. Dave PS get metal evaporated tape for top notch 400 lines picture quality.

Great camera for the price
Wanted a camera for Christmas and got this one because of the price, and needless to say it's a great camera. Just got back from DisneyWorld and the 108 performed extremely well. The nightshot proved handy in those dark rides, and the quality of picture was well for the Festival of the Lion King performance. The only problem I saw was that the autofocus was slow to adapt at times during those fireworks and laser shows. I didn't expect it to keep up, but it did better than I expected. Talk about impact resistant, I had a hissy when it fell out of the bag into the boat on the pirates of the carribean, but it took a lickin and it's still ticking. Once home, I just connected it to my TV and watched my vacation replay. Great camera for the price, definately worth more. Only thing better is digital. Sony has a winner here.

Good Deal
We use it for all our family events and are please at how easy it is to use. (never read the directions)The picture quality is good, clear and crisp pictures. We dont intend to use it on the computer so the analog camera is a better deal for us than digital.

Have had two of these with same problem
First of all, I love the camera when it works. Short on features and not digital quality, but top of the line picture quality for 8mm. Has clear, white whites and sharp picture. It's also very easy to use.

However, after just 4 months of use, the camera started not keeping a charge. I discovered the problem to be that the camera would go into play mode on it's own from the off position and drain the battery. (Switch remains locked in the off position, but camera is on and able to play tapes)I was also unable to charge the battery for the same reason.(Battery will not charge while in play mode even though plugged in)

The Sony warranty had expired (They have a very short warranty period) but I had purchased an extended warranty so my camera was relpaced.

Now, my replacement camera is exibiting the same problem. I would greatly discourage buying this camera... this problem renders the camera virtually useless.

I have discovered this is a known problem on other Sony Handycams...

    It's worth what it is
I bought this camera 3 months ago. It's great to have it 2nd-hand... It is easy to use, stable, small enough to carry with convenience. I have focussed on the mid-noon sun with maximum exposure and everything turned dark after that but after a few hours of rest, it could work properly like before. One thing I don't like is that you need a tripod when in closest zoom-in because you can never have steady hands to keep the picture not shaking. It does not have an LCD so you have to keep your eye on the color viewfinder. However, it's worth what it is. With [the money spent], I can't expect to get any greater camera. So it's a good job for less and I am happy with it. If you have more money, better buy a more modern model which has LCD for example.

    Easy to use
I needed to record my classes for certification. I couldn't wait for one to become available in the media center.

I found the Sony CCD-TR517 to be nice to my checking account and nice to me. I found it easy to set up and use.

The instructions manual is very user friendly.

    This camera is the best...
I have owned this camera for a few years now and I think all of the features and quality are the best around. The newer Sony hi8 cameras don't even have this many features!

Good camera for the price - but make sure you check specs
I bought this camera slightly used in mint condition and I'm fairly impressed with it. The steadyshot function and nightshot are excellent features. However, I'm selling it, because you cannot take still shots, and it costs you an extra [money amount]for a media converter if you want to review/edit your videos on your computer. But, it is a good camera if you like watching home videos on your TV.

    An 'ok' Buy
I recieved this camera as a gift and used it 6 times before the amplifier went out, so that when you were watching your videos-you got sound, but no picture. This happened with our first camera, but you could see the video but there was no sound-also the amplifier. Unfortunatly it didn't fall under warranty so we have a broken camera lying around and must buy a new one. I give it three stars because for the time that I was able to use it, it was a great camera. If you do decide to buy this one-maybe think about an extended warranty?

    Great Camera for the Price
I purchased the Sony camera as a intermediate video camera. I figure the technology is still evolving for some of the new and exciting digital video cameras and storage devices, i.e. CD storage.

My first video camera was cutting edge technology at the time. I paid over $1200 for Sony Super 8mm with b/w viewfinder which started to eat and destroy tapes while on vacation. Fixing it did not make good financial sense. Today, $400 buys a camera rich in features with separate color LCD viewfinder.

Bottom line, this camera is a great family video camera. Easy to use right out of the box. Save your money and avoid more expensive, cutting edge cameras. Just figure that these things only have a life of 4-5 years and when it is time to trade in you can easily afford cutting edge technology that will be 4-years old. It is just not worth spending more for technology that will be dirt cheap in a matter of time and possibly, broken.
